In a new series of articles, well-known jewellery designer, Pallavi Dudeja-Foley, will take you through various jewellery categories- wrist accessories, ear ornaments, necklaces, etc.- explaining, as she goes along, the numerous ways to make them better in terms of ‘quality of design’.
In the next article of the series, Pallavi Dudeja Foley, focuses on ideas to design unique engagement rings.
Engagement rings are more than just jewels, they are symbols of unspoken words and commitments. These rings are important jewels, as they are very close to the hearts of couples. This makes the design process of the product very dependent on the individual and the designer has to keep this in mind, while designing an engagement ring.
It is a very exciting and challenging product to design, according to me, it is like capturing a love story, in a piece of jewellery.
A large rock set in a ring can surely make heads turn, however it is the concept and the design of the product that can really make it extraordinary, and this is possible to achive even if a customer has a small budget.
A unique design and the possibility of using varied coloured stones as a ‘centre stone’ instead of diamonds, can add the much sought after panache, jazz and the uniqueness in an engagement ring.
The time that the person has on hand, becomes one of the critical factors to decide on the choice of the engagement ring.
Traditionally, most people like some sort of customization on their engagement ring. My mother’s engagement ring, is a beautiful cluster of diamonds, with a shank that has their names inscribed in it. From the designer or the jewelers point of view, the important thing is to present the customer with an array of styles in engagement rings, from customized, to couture, to classic.
The engagement rings of Celebrities have always made news and set fashion trends, and from there have emerged many new and revolutionary styles of engagement rings. I believe that all women, not only the celebrities, like to flaunt their engagement rings and this makes it a perfect product category, for a designer to work their creative magic.
So this symbol of love and commitment gets more important as it is seen as a status symbol and as a fashion statement aswell.
Discussed below are few simple points designers can look into to achieve unique engagement rings.
I have found that to give a personal touch to the engagement ring, it is important for the designer to meet the customer. To really add a personal touch in the ring, this is an important step, that should not be missed. I had once designed an engagement ring for a friend who was about to get married and it was inspired from Jaipur, since they had met for the first time there. We decided to use a pink sapphire, as a centre stone, which was set using prongs, which were styled and detailed intricately, being inspired from the jaali work from the Mahals in Jaipur. The whole idea is to add a personal touch, since
the engagement rings are such an important jewel for a couple. A chat with the customer, brings to the forefront the various things that are important in their relationship and the designer is able to create a unique and refreshingly new design idea, which can become invaluable to the couple.
However, the easiest and the oldest way to personalize and make a ring unique, is to inscribe the couples name on the inside of the shank. Not only names, but the date, time, a special message, have been a part of engagement rings. If we look into the graphic details, the type of font makes a lot of difference.
A ring can look considerably different with the use of different shapes in diamonds and possibly by juxtaposing them with other shapes. Say for example a trillion or a small diamond rough used in an engagement ring can make it look very unique.
Colored diamonds and coloured stones make a great option for an engagement rings. The idea is to use a color that works positively with the person. It is an easy way to make the ring unique.
Setting the centre stones in an unconventional way, can transform a basic ring, into a piece of personalized art. Many times by just altering the way a stone is set in the metal, and by creating a unique setting style, a classic ring can get the required twist.
So I would like to end by saying, that you meet your customers, know their story and design something very unique for them, that they flaunt and cherish for the rest of their lives.
