BIS seizes ₹10cr unhallmarked gold jewellery in Warangal

22-07-2026   01:55 PM

The Hyderabad Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a search operation at a jewellery store in Warangal on Tuesday and seized around 7.8 kg of gold jewellery worth ₹10 crore for allegedly violating mandatory hallmarking norms under the BIS Act, 2016, and the Central govt’s regulations.

During the inspection, BIS officials found necklace sets, rings, chains, earrings and other ornaments. Officials said the sale of such jewellery violated provisions governing the sale of hallmarked gold articles under the BIS Act, 2016.

PV Srikanth, director and head of the BIS Hyderabad branch, said hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery in 13 districts of Telangana, including Warangal and Hanamkonda. He urged jewellers in these districts to sell only BIS-hallmarked gold jewellery bearing a genuine Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number and to strictly comply with the provisions of the BIS Act.

Srikanth said the BIS would continue inspections and enforcement drives to protect customers’ interests and promote quality and transparency in the jewellery sector.

He also appealed to customers to buy only BIS-hallmarked gold jewellery carrying a valid HUID, verify the number through the BIS CARE mobile application, and insist on obtaining a bill. He said every genuine BIS-hallmarked gold jewellery item must carry the BIS logo, purity and fineness mark, and a six-digit HUID number. Customers were advised to report any misuse of hallmarking or the sale of jewellery without an HUID through the BIS CARE application.
