Gemmological Institute of India [GII] Signs Memorandum of Understanding

02-03-2026   12:15 PM

With Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand
Gemmological Institute of India (GII), the premier gemmology institute in India and the only institution recognized by the Government of India’s Department of Science & Technology as a SIRO (Scientific and Industrial Research Organization) laboratory, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Gemmological Institute of Thailand [GIT] during the 73rd Bangkok Gems and Jewellery fair being organized at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Bangkok.

The cooperation agreement outlays activities including education, research, knowledge sharing, research workshops and other areas.

According to Mehul Shah, Chairman GII, “The GIT team led by Mr. Sumed and Mr. Thanong have been doing exceptional work Likewise GII is well recognised for its R&D and testing under the leadership of senior scientist Dr. Reddy and other seiors. It is time to come together and grow collectively and expand further by bringing in similar institutes under one umbrella. I thank both Mr. Sumed and Mr. Thanong for the hospitality rendered to me. India shares a long history with Thailand that has become stronger with time with mutual interest playing a major role. This mutual cooperation agreement is an important step to work closely especially at a time when the entire dynamics related to certification, grading and education is changing keeping in mind the advancements in AI driven technology.”

Mehul Shah also hinted at coming together of non-profit organizations such as GII, GIT, DANAT and many others to form a “Federation of Diamonds, gemstones, Jewellery Institutes & Research Centers.”

He added that ‘in the lines of ONE EARTH, ONE WORLD, all the community members should work together towards a single goal which will eventually strengthen our business and encourage the next generation to take the reins. An umbrella organization such as the FEDERATION will benefit not only gems and jewellery economies but also will enhance and evolve the entire Industry to a more transparent and sustainable business ecosystem.
